7 reasons why enterprise architects are entitled to a web-based EA Software Tool

Below are seven reasons why it is recommended to use an EA tool for creating visual communication products in the organization. Especially when working with enterprise architecture is a priority on the agenda, the architecture documents are piling up to chaos and every year the discussion is redone about what is architecture and if entity relationship diagrams are architecture models, without actually getting any further.

Any of these seven arguments below show how I as a Visual Enterprise Architect have observed, practiced and experienced Enterprise Architecture and how I have used Dragon1, the web-based EA Tool, to create pragmatic visual architecture solutions. You will save time by ...

10 rules and guidelines for Application Rationalization with Dragon1

Anyone can save money with Application Rationalization

Often when cutting budgets someone yells: Well can’t do we something with Application Rationalization? Do we really need all those applications? And that’s when Application Rationalization starts.

Why create your own list with rules and guidelines for Application Rationalization

Here are ten rules for Application Rationalization derived from design principles which I have collected during the past 20 years, when I have been busy with one thing called: application.
Next to these 10 rules and guidelines I work with a list of 100 rules and guidelines and an approach of Application Rationalization in the open Dragon1 EA Method. And I urge you to do the same, document the rules and guidelines for your own use!
Of course there is more to Application Rationalization than these 10 rules and guidelines, but it is a fresh start and with what I have seen in practice always one or more of these ten rules and guidelines are overlooked. So, see this as your own Application Rationalization Cheat list.

What is Application Rationalization?

Application Rationalization is an organization's strategic process...

Enterprise Architecture is about CxOs making the enterprise future proof

Following up a discussion I had with several lead enterprise architects, in this blog I am trying to put down in a condensed way what Enterprise Architecture is about  and thus why in my opinion Enterprise Architecture is worth the effort to cope with tomorrow’s challenges.

Enterprises like buildings can be viewed as structures

A building can be considered as a multi system with constructive, operative and decorative dimensions. This multi system of a building we call a building structure or structure.
Likewise we can view an enterprise or organization as a structure: An enterprise has also a constructive dimension (formed by the application of concepts like departments and units), operative dimensions (formed by the application of concepts like procurement and production) and decorative dimensions (formed by the application of concepts like image building, media campaign and data-hiding).

The question for CxOs (the Owners/Clients) and architects (the Designers) is: Is the structure ...

Invest in XL Sports Camper Vehicles now! – An Example Vision

An Example Vision

What's the use of a blog on vision without a clear example of a vision? I'm emphasizing this is just an example vision!

Suppose I am the chief of a car rental company in The Netherlands. And I just have been on a camper holiday to Australia. Back in Europe I see more and more elderly people selling their homes and buying a camper. In the professional literature it is all sorrow and misery in the car rental business. And what I see in travel guides is that a lot of camping sites are still focused on young families with backpack tents.

Sitting back in a rocking chair with some vintage wine I am thinking how the future of Europe, traveling and my company will be like in 2020. I am desperately trying to find something to make sure my company will still exist or will be necessary in the future. Or else ...

Any vision is worth its weight in gold

What if ?

What if Steve Jobs did not share his thoughts about how people want to use devices everywhere. What if Lou Ottens, the inventor of the Cassette Tape and the Compact Disc, did not share his thoughts about how people want to play music every where. These companies Apple and Philips would probably have never become that big of a world players they are today.

What are your thoughts ?

This blog is about you, not about me or someone else. But about you. It is about inspiring you to think if you have a vision on a certain topic? Are you aware of a phenomenon, trends or developments and what do you do with that awareness. Do you propagate that to the good of a community or a company?
Today’s world wide topics waiting for a vision are: freedom, poverty, health, peace, work, energy and happiness. Topics of lesser importance may be: travelling, music, sports, holidays, video, transport, communication and relationships. But even on these topics you may have your own futuristic thoughts.
Important to note is that being a visionary and having a vision is not about making money. It is about having fun, enjoying every day you live in doing what you want. Being busy with exploring trends and developing a vision immediately sets you on a path of doing what you really want more often.
